I just had a most amazing group!!!
I start off asking group members if they recall their very first bike…what color was it…the neighborhood they rode in…the sound of the tires on the pavement, dirt, or gravel…the wind in the hair…the sun on their back…
I have them list on the white board their names, the color of their bike and how young they were.
As individuals describe their first bike you will notice their demeanor shift from a “what a waste of time being here” to a child-like innocence. Their bodies and facial muscles will relax and they will giggle from their belly!!! It is such a blessing to witness!!! I see it happen every time!!!
I thank them for sharing and ask them to give their palpable joy names. I point out this is their natural dopamine!!!
I ask them what the drug that brought them here was and ask what was good about using it!!! Again more positive words will come pouring out of their mouths… It is agreed that this substance also provides dopamine – however most clients will point out that it is borrowed dopamine that originates from the drug and not from within!
I ask them to give their natural dopamine a number from 1 to 10 with 10 being the best experience ever and one being boy that truly sucked I don’t want to do that again!
You will notice the numbers are off the charts for natural dopamine!
I follow up with asking them about their drug induced dopamine and the numbers are minimal at best a 5 with a price!!! Or they will point out how it may start at a 20+ and they will add but it won’t stay there and may end up at a -20.
I stand by their list of names and bike colors and natural dopamine and cry out Yeah! Then move to the drug induced dopamine and cry out Yeah?
Our clients are so smart!!! When they recall that their bodies have the ability to generate joy from within their faces will beam and radiate recovery!!! Let’s remind them!!!
If you know me you also know that I am very gentle in my approach. Creating a safe and accepting environment is priority. So I also point out that for some this was not a safe or joyful time so I give everyone the option to pass from participating in this exercise and ask them to schedule an individual session with me.
Being an alcohol and drug counselor for me has been such a blessing!!!
I ask you know who every morning “Please put me where I am supposed to be – help me meet who I am supposed to meet and help me to learn from everyone and everything” I absolutely love My Grace Filled Life After Addiction because she/he delivers every single time!!! This group was no exception!!!
May you have a grace filled day too!!! I can’t wait to meet you too!!!
