Janis Crawford, MA, LPC, ACS, is a master’s level licensed professional counselor and approved clinical supervisor who is currently writing her dissertation on motivational interviewing. Since 1998 she has worked in the field of addictions as a treatment provider, clinical and administrative supervisor, and program director. She became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2007. She has since integrated motivational interviewing method and practice with correctional treatment for addiction and criminal thinking in the Wyoming Department of Corrections, and the detoxification and stabilization program at Providence Medical Center.

Ariel Singer, is the Program and Training Director for the Northwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center (NWATTC), the Pacific Northwest node of a national network funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to promote evidence-based practice in substance use disorder treatment. Ariel has trained hundreds of medical and behavioral health professionals in motivational interviewing in workshops, on-site trainings and webinars. Ariel has Master’s Degree in Public Health and is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.

Goal of Training

Motivational Interviewing (MI) competency requires practice and time. One of the founders of MI, Bill Miller, has stated “The distance between doing MI and being MI is 10 years.” Proficiency depends upon ongoing coaching in MI that promotes communication and encourages change. This training is a blend of philosophical conversation about overcoming challenges of using Motivational Interviewing (MI) with consistency and technical opportunities to hone MI skills. Participants will discuss the meaning of MI spirit and the ways it is manifest during interventions. Participants will practice using skills to shape conversations about change and receive feedback from peers and trainers.

Behavioral Objectives
This training is considered an advanced educational level. It is appropriate for clinicians and those professionals who have a thorough understanding of the basic concepts yet are looking for an in-depth and detailed presentation and practice of the subject area. Participants of this training will:

  • Recognize the spirit of motivational interviewing during conversations about change,
  • Practice motivational interviewing (MI) skills that guide change conversations,
  • Learn to adjust strategies according to processes of motivational interviewing,
  • Gain insight into ways that applying MI strategies enhance the spirit of MI, and
  • Integrate knowledge of spirit, skills and process to manage personal progress.

What is MINT?

The Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) is an international organization of trainers in motivational interviewing, incorporated as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit charitable organization in the state of Virginia, USA. The trainers come from diverse backgrounds and apply MI in a variety of settings. Their central interest is to improve the quality and effectiveness of counseling and consultations with clients about behavior change. Started in 1997 by a small group of trainers trained by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, the organization has since grown to represent 35 countries and more than 20 different languages.

What is MINT’s Mission?

The mission of MINT is to promote good practice in the use, research and training of motivational interviewing. MINT supports the continuing learning and skillfulness of its members through meetings, open sharing of resources, communication, publications, and shared practice opportunities. Rather than seeking to limit or control the practice and training of motivational interviewing, MINT promotes quality applications of motivational interviewing across cultures, languages, and contexts.
